Aprile 2025 Automazione e Strumentazione Tecnica 90 CONTROLLO T en years ago, the process industry faced a deadlock: long development times, monolithic plants, and immense integration efforts dominated the sec- tor. The simple exchange of plant modules or flexible scaling of production capacities seemed nearly impossible. The idea that modules could be standardized and seamlessly integrated into exist- ing plants was merely a bold vision at the time. However, with the development of the Module Type Package (MTP) ( Picture 1 ), everything changed. Today, MTP is the key to flexible, fast, and manufacturer-independent automation. What is MTP? - Technical Foundations and Functionality The Module Type Package (MTP) can be best compared to a printer driver for industrial auto- mation: it is a standardized, software-based driver file that describes all relevant aspects of a process module’s automation technology, including human-machine interfaces (HMI), communication, behavior, alarms, and diagnos- tics. Just as a printer works immediately after being connected to a computer, MTP enables the easy integration of modules from different man- ufacturers into existing plants. Communication between the individual mod- ule controllers and the overarching Process Orchestration Layer (POL) occurs via OPC UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture). OPC UA ensures secure, plat- form-independent, and semantically defined communication between modules and process NOTA AUTORI A. The idea of standardized, easily integrated modules was just a vision. The development of the Module Type Package (MTP) changed this, enabling flexible, fast, and manufacturer-independent automation.
